A Deeper and More Profound Collaboration
Man Ray — 1921
Created by Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray in 1921, Belle Haleine is a mock advertisement featuring a vintage Rigaud perfume bottle, rebranded
with the name Belle Haleine and a fictional scent called Eau de Voilette.
At its center is a custom label bearing a photographic portrait of
Duchamp in drag as Rrose Sélavy.
The image mimics the design of early 20th-century cosmetics packaging,
with stylized typography, staged lighting, and a theatrical backdrop.
A string of pearls frames the figure, adding a touch of glamour to
the constructed identity.
