Da-Dandy Identified as Marcel Duchamp
Hannah Höch — 1919
Da-Dandy is a collage that blends fragmented imagery of fashion,
gender, and identity into a haunting, surreal composition.
A towering silhouette composed of cut-and-pasted photographs stands
in a distorted pose—part elegant, part grotesque—surrounded by layered
textures and disjointed body parts.
Through this constructed figure, Höch critiques the masculine ideal and
satirizes the performance of gender, drawing from commercial imagery
while dismantling its authority.
The work stands as one of the most complex and enigmatic pieces of
Berlin Dada, merging beauty and absurdity in equal measure.
